Public Relations and Search Optimisation Are Most Cost Effective Marketing Tools in Business Downturn

Using a professional public relations company and getting proper search engine optimisation for your business website are the two most cost effective things businesses can do in today's tightening economic climate.

For the cost of a single half page ad in a suburban paper, or a quarter page or less in a metropolitan daily, a business can get a month of carefully planned and executed public relations exposure in targeted publications, radio, online and, if your story warrants it, appropriate TV programs.

And optimising your website, so it is found high up the Google or Yahoo results pages, is even less expensive - and, in the long run, the single most important thing you can do for your business in the medium to long term.

"More than 90% of small businesses either haven't got the foggiest idea what Search Engine Optimisation is or have never bothered to get it properly done, even though it is relatively inexpensive," John Hanrahan, Managing Director of John Hanrahan Business Communications, said today.

SEO work on your websitesis vital today

"I am constantly surprised at the lack of knowledge and effort in the small to medium business market to have SEO work done to their websites. And of course, public relations exposure, getting your business name into the media, and into online versions of media outlets, is directly linked to the SEO work you have done on your site.

"Today, the two are virtually integrated. People read or hear about your business, product or service and the first thing they do is go looking for your website. The exact name of your website may not be mentioned, so people do a search. If you've had good SEO work done on your site, links, keywords and phrases, title text that reflects the content of that specific page you are going to be a long way ahead of your competition.."

John Hanrahan created and managed the National Nine Network's Business Website Awards for the former Small Business Program.

"I've followed the development of search engine optimisation very closely and had the fortune to work with GetData Software, which is a world leader in data recovery from the PC environment, PC's, laptops, digital cameras and iPods. They own 17 websites and most of their sales, more than 90%, are in the US, Britain, Europe and Asia, all through good SEO work on their sites to keep them at the top of search engine results," he added.

"They have refined the search engine optimisation process to be regularly found on Google or Yahoo.

"And I'm now working with a number of businesses helping them with SEO work and the ability to have their websites getting better search results."

Public relations can get your your business story to a wide audience

The outcomes of good public relations and search engine optimisation are now inextricably linked.

He said good public relations will involve linking your business strategies with clearly defining a company's key business messages, identifying media opportunities and then direct follow-up with journalists, editors or producers to interest them in those stories.

"Companies have plenty of good stories to tell and what they do, what they have achieved, developments of products or services, new contracts, new appointments and new products," John noted.

"But because they are deeply involved in the day to day operations and, probably, don't have a thorough knowledge of how each area of the media operates, and most often take things for granted. A good PR person is probably a former journalist, like myself, and can very quickly see the potential of certain things a company is doing and how it might be of interest to a newspaper or radio station."

Do the Bokashi - And Help Save The Planet

Do you Bokashi? Thousands of Australians are learning to.

And if Maree O'Malley has her way, every household in Australia will be doing the Bokashi in their kitchens, on their balconies and in their gardens.

No, it's not the latest exotic dance - but there are a few simple steps involved.Bokashi kitchen composting is a quick and easy way of composting your kitchen food waste in a specially designed air-tight bucket that also generates a rich compost liquid for your garden.

It's the most effective way of composting kitchen food waste.Maree has turned a passion for the environment and a chance discovery four years into a growing business with 22 outlets across Australia.

They include Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Hobart, Bundaberg, Wodonga, Armidale and Murwillumbah.Maree is a regular at Sydney Organic Food Markets at Leichhardt and Frenchs Forest.

Bokashi is a Japanese term that simply means 'fermented organic matter' and is made from a combination of bran and rice husks and infused with a mix of beneficial microbes called Effective Micro-organisms (EM) and applied to your kitchen food waste in the Bokashi bucket.

Bokashi powder application

It has been traditionally used to increase microbial diversity and activity in soils and to supply nutrients to plants. The Bokashi powder is progressively sprinkled on the waste as you tip more in to the Bokashi kitchen bucket.

Maree first saw the 20 litre Bokashi composting Buckets four years ago on holiday in New Zealand."I thought it was an absolutely wonderful system and wanted to get one for myself. When I returned to Sydney I could not find one nor anyone whom had even heard of it," she explained this week preparing another batch of the buckets for shipping across Australia.

"A very small idea of a business started to grow in the back on my mind and I found the domain name www.bokashi.com.au was available so I purchased it and Bokashi Composting Australia was born."Bokashi Composting Australia's brand of Bokashi, Green Frog Bokashi, is made with a mix of wheat bran and rice husks that have been sprayed with a group of Micro-Organisms call Effective Micro-Organisms (EM). "The wheat bran and rice husks are simply a carrier and food source for the microbes; the microbes are the essential part of this composting system. These microbes are not manufactured they all exist in nature, such as lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, photosynthetic bacteria and actinomycetes."

Municipal Councils' Interest

While individuals buy them for their kitchens for burying the fermented waste in their gardens, councils around the country are now considering making them available to local ratepayers."Kiama Council has bought 200 of them," Maree explained.

"You can put fresh and vegetables and fruit, including citrus, prepared foods, cooked and uncooked meats and fish and other foods like eggs, bread and tea bags. The Bokashi juice held in the airtight bucket is ideal as a rich fertiliser and drain cleaner."

"It's a convenient, simple way to prevent food waste from ending up in landfill, while providing your garden with a nourishing food source and enriching microbes," explains Maree. "The Bokashi Bucket is successfully changing the way homeowners can deal with their food and help the environment. Approximately 60% of household rubbish that ends in land fill could have been composted.

"Such a large organically-active material buried 'anaerobically' (without air) in landfill causes over 3% of Australia's total greenhouse gas emissions annually by producing methane, a gas with 25 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide."

Wrong Assumptions on Oil Changes Costs Mining and Power Generation Companies Tens of Thousands of Dollars

A common, but wrong, assumption that lubricants need to be changed on a specified time schedule, is costing mining and power generation companies tens of thousands of dollars a year.

In reality you only need to change your lubricant when it's worn out, says Steve McDonald, National Plant Manager for Leighton Contractors. On-site analysis assists in working out when it is worn out.

Mr. McDonald wasone the keynote speakers at Oilchecks Oil Conditioning Maintenance For Mining and Power Generation Industries Conference in Sydney on May 1 and 2.

Speakers include
:
Dr. Mark Okazaki, Chevron Texaco; Jo Ameye, Fluitec International; Greg Livingstone, EPT, Tucson Arizona; Dr. Ludger Quick, Siemens Power Generation; Dr. Akira Sasaki, formerly Kleentek Corporation; Jim Forbes Forbes Consulting, formerly with Caltex
Leighton's has successfully, and cost effectively, introduced on-site oil analysis on a number of their locations.

"The potential value they can add to their business is a faster and more accurate decision making process that is conditioned based rather than planned or reactive," he added.

"There are potential savings in the catching and acting upon warnings in a much shorter time frame. Also more frequent testing of oils will allow a better trend to be established that can allow an extension of oil life and changes in the current servicing practices that would have cost benefits as well as potentially more up-time and hence production benefits."

Mr. McDonald estimates that increasing oil costs and their impact will not be great because oil is only a small component of the cost of running machinery.
"However, as with all costs that rapidly increase greater focus will be brought to bear in this area and with this will come better and more efficient use of our resources, he says.
"This has recently happened with tyres in the mining industry which were considered a consumable but are now considered as a resource and greater management focus is placed on them with the result that tyre life has increased and tyre cost per tonne has decreased.
"I would expect similar results with increased focus on the use of fluids, and on-site analysis will become an important element of this increased focus because of the immediacy of the results it can provide."
